Few Homeowners Are Completely Certain They’re Financially Protected from Flood Risks

  • Basement and foundation improvements: You can install foundation vents, which allow flood water to flow through your home instead of pooling around it. This helps to relieve some of the pressure flood water can put on the basement walls and foundation. You can also install sump pumps, which are used to push water out of basements where the flooding occurs. It’s a good idea to have a sump pump that has a battery backup so it will still work if the power goes out.
  • Sealants: There are various types of coatings and sealants you can add to your walls, foundation, doorways and windows that can make it tougher for water to get into the home through cracks.
  • Grading: It can be extremely helpful to grade your lawn and gardens away from the house. If the hills run toward your house, it’s just asking for rainwater to pool around the foundation.
  • Check valves: Adding check valves to your pipes can prevent a flooded sewage system from backing up into your home.
